Chapter Three:

Motivation How Motivated are You for Success?

In this section we will look at how motivated you are and if you possess the qualities needed to be in your own business, and then finally we will take a look at your financial status.

"Do you want to know who you are? Don't ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you" Thomas Jefferson

1. How motivated are you?

Here is a Simple Test to take to see just how motivated you are! If you find that you may have a great idea, but are not motivated enough, you may want to keep your JOB, or if you truly have passion you may need to have a coach, to keep you motivated!
Motivation to change is the best predictor we have of how successful you will be will be in your desire to change your behavior. For instance, if you want to stop smoking or lose weight, this simple but accurate test will give you a reasonably good idea of how well you are likely to respond to treatment.

I love to take silly tests. And that is just what they are silly, yet can also help me to understand what is really necessary. There are no “right or wrong” answers. Just answers..

Rate yourself on these four aspects of motivation.
1) How IMPORTANT is it for you to change NOW?
0____1____2____3____4____5____6____7____8____9____10
2) How READY are you to change now?
0____1____2____3____4____5____6____7____8____9____10

3) How CONFIDENT are you that you can change now?
0____1____2____3____4____5____6____7____8____9____10
4) How COMMITTED are you to change now?
0____1____2____3____4____5____6____7____8____9____10

SCORE INTERPRETATION
0-20 You're thinking about changing but not ready to take action. Discuss with someone the issues are that may be holding you back
21-30 You've got a reasonable chance of success but there is a part of you that is hesitant. Don't worry if your CONFIDENT score is lower than the others. This may be due to you having tried so many treatments in the past that you can't believe that effective help is available. It is, and you can change, with the right help.
31-40 You're ready to take action. The higher your score, the more likely you are to succeed.

“Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy. “
Norman Vincent Peale

So you want to be an Entrepreneur?

"For a successful entrepreneur it can mean extreme wealth. But with extreme wealth comes extreme responsibility. And the responsibility for me is to invest in creating new businesses, create jobs, employ people, and to put money aside to tackle issues where we can make a difference." Richard Branson

Sound I stay or should I go?? (Journal)

3. Inside Out or Outside In

Here is another short quiz to see if your business (or business idea) is governed from the inside out or the outside in. Read both lists below and keep count of how many of these statements ring true for you.

LIST #1

I feel overwhelmed by all of the ways to market my business and wonder how to fit them all in.

I think I have a good business idea but I just don't know where to start to make it happen.

I dread when someone asks me what my business is all about.

I feel like I'm marketing like crazy but not seeing any profits yet.

I hate looking at my business' finances.

I don't feel like people "get" my business when I talk to them at networking events.

I trust other people's judgment more than my own.

I sometimes wonder if I have what it takes to build a successful business.

Between business and family obligations, I feel like I have no time for myself.

I have a tendency to criticize myself in my own head.

I fear that if I don't put on my "successful face" at events, people will realize that I don't know what I'm doing.

When I do something well, I have a tendency to downplay it or make excuses like saying I was "just lucky."

My business is not moving forward as fast as I'd like it to.

I have a lot of anxiety about what my friends and family think about my business.

I don't feel like I can talk candidly about my business challenges, even with those closest to me.

There are so many successful business owners out there and I wonder what's wrong with me that I can't get there.

I'm not feeling motivated or enthusiastic about my business and I'm not sure why.

I sometimes compromise what I think is right or fair in order to get a customer or vendor to do business with me.

I avoid certain business activities (sales calls, technical troubleshooting, networking) because I don't want to do them.

LIST #2

I take time to listen to what my gut is telling me when I have a major decision to make.

I know exactly what I want this business to look like in five years and have a plan to get there.

I take calculated risks and allow myself to show my true colors.

I am confident in networking situations and meetings.

I know exactly who my ideal customer is and why.

I am willing to let customers or vendors go if they aren't a good fit for me.

I have a strong sense of what I will and will not do to grow my business.

I have a strong support system surrounding me.

I celebrate my accomplishments and graciously accept compliments.

I am excited about my business and truly enjoy working on it.

I feel confident about the activities I do consistently to fill my pipeline.

I know which marketing activities produce results in my business and which ones don't.

I am clear and proactive, allowing me to move forward quickly on business opportunities.

I understand that great today is better than perfect tomorrow.

I know that my vision of success is different than anyone else's and that I alone have to define it.

I make decisions that sit well with me and the way I want my business to be perceived.

I value my time and make time for the things that are most important.

I know deep down inside that I deserve to make money and enjoy my successes.

I feel powerful and energized when I think about my life and my business.

Add up your total for each and see which is higher. If you have more "trues" in the first list, you're outside in. More trues on the List 2? You're inside out. (Unlike your laundry, this is one time it's GOOD to be inside out!)

If you find yourself more in the "outside in" camp, we urge you to invest the time and money in addressing this NOW, before you go any further. Whether it's through our programs or someone else's, you owe it to yourself and your business.

Have you developed successful habits?

Running a business that's governed by the outside world, instead of what resonates with you, sabotages your success and can leave you running in circles, chasing "shiny objects" and never getting anywhere. Make no mistake; it has caused the demise of many businesses. Don't let yours be one of them – its way too important!

“Success…seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving.

They make mistakes, but they don’t quit.” –Conrad Hilton
